O'Toole's

Crimson Lake

O'Toole's is a student hangout south of James Cook University on the Captain Cook Highway. Its role in the story is concentrated in an evening with Amanda Pharrell and Ted Conkaffey: the bar becomes a stage for Amanda's conspicuous arrival and skill at pool, then the setting from which Ted takes her when her condition raises concern.

Setting and Character

The bar is described as an unconventional student venue, frequented by stoners and dropouts rather than the usual campus crowd. Its unadorned tables lack textbooks and notebooks, and its walls do not advertise jug specials. Pool tables stand at the back of the large room; at the counter, two young women play Uno. These details give O'Toole's a distinct social texture without making it a conventional university meeting place.

Amanda and Ted at the Bar

Amanda summons Ted to O'Toole's, calling him her partner and teasing him about the nickname Teddy, which she associates with Stella Scully. When Ted arrives, he initially watches Amanda from a distance, surprised by her changed appearance. She is dressed for a night out, and the young men gathered around her watch as she lines up a difficult pool shot. Their response registers both her practiced ability and the attention her presence attracts; she is not merely being observed but holding the room through her performance.

Leaving and Aftermath

Ted later pulls Amanda away and urges her to say goodbye. In the dim parking lot, he realizes how drunk she is and wonders whether someone may have put something in her drink; the cause is left uncertain. Amanda struggles to keep her thoughts together as she recalls a girl named Manni from Brisbane Women's, linking the scene at O'Toole's to her prison past. When Ted tries to put an arm around her after she stumbles, Amanda recoils and brushes him off. The departure shifts the episode from public spectacle to a moment of vulnerability and guardedness, leaving Ted to respond without knowing what has caused her condition.
